What you wear to your senior session is a way to make a statement of who you are and what your style is. For this reason, what you wear is an important piece of the process when it comes to your photos telling your unique story. After years of photographing both senior clients, I have learned what looks good and what doesn’t look good in photos. Here is a list of the top 10 things NOT to wear to your senior photoshoot.
Avoid…
1. Wrinkled clothing- You want to make sure your clothes look the very best in your photos, so make sure you iron/steam them prior to your session. Wrinkles make it appear as though you did not care to take the time to prep for your session. Putting your clothes in a hanging garment bag will prevent them from getting wrinkled during transit.
2. Tight Clothing- You want to make sure your clothes fit properly. If your clothes are too tight they will be uncomfortable, resulting in photos that do not look the best. Plus, tight clothing will limit your posing capabilities, which will produce a lack of variety for your photo gallery.
3. Oversized Clothing- The opposite of tight clothing is clothing that is too big, and you don’t want that either! Oversized clothing can be trendy, but it doesn’t allow you and your shape to be seen. This can cause you to get lost inside the clothes. Wearing clothes that are too big can also result in unflattering photos because they can make you look much bigger than you really are.
4. Too Trendy- I love a good fashion trend, but super trendy clothing will date your photos, so make sure you use trends sparingly or mix them with more traditional pieces so your photos look good many years from now.
5. Too Old (particularly for seniors)- You want to dress your age, so choose clothing that is appropriate for a teenager/young adult. Sometimes, moms can try to influence what their daughters wear and force an item from their own closet. Just make sure you are wearing clothing that is age and season-appropriate for you.
6. Crazy Patterns- This does not mean you have to wear all solids! But it does mean choosing your patterns wisely. Make sure the pattern doesn’t overwhelm you or take away from you as the subject of the photo.
7. All the same color- Your absolute favorite color could be red, but make sure that every piece of clothing you choose is NOT red. Choose different colors so that your photos show variety. It is helpful to consult Pinterest and look at different color palettes for the season that you want your photoshoot.
8. Same style of clothing- Just like with color, you want your outfits to have variety. So don’t wear all dresses or wear all jeans only switch the top for all your outfits. I tell clients to pick from the following categories: casual, cozy, dressy, school-related, sports-related, preppy or edgy, etc. This can include a dress, a jeans or pants outfit, a skirt, a suit, etc. You want VARIETY 🙂
9. Colored or patterned undergarments- Nothing is worse than seeing undergarments through your clothes! Make sure you choose nude/neutral solid colors, and remember to bring the appropriate undergarments for each outfit.
10. Brand Logos- Your shoot is about you, not a specific brand, so make sure you are wearing logo-free clothing. Or, if there’s a brand that you absolutely love, make sure the logo is not too overwhelming. Again, you want your photos to be about YOU, not the brand.
I hope things not to wear for your senior photoshoot list helps you plan your outfits accordingly.
